Natural Pigment and Process
Using natural pigment for my artworks is time-consuming and requires multiple steps. Part of the process is foraging for soft rocks locally or during my trips, to finding ochres, chalks, clays, and mica. Then grinding the materials and sifting them to then be mixed with water or oils.
Often, I will use vegetable extracts to make tints from a variety of ingredients such as tea leaves, beets, red cabbage, or pollens from Lillies, tulip flowers. The visual effect of colors is dependent upon the physical characteristics of the pigment. Each pigment or tint has different textures that will reflect and absorb light differently.
